An anxiety-provoking novel for pandemic reading about a slow-rolling apocalypse in which human evolution is unwinding, set against the backdrop of climate catastrophe. Gripping and lyrical and lived in and bleak. Owes a debt to The Handmaid’s Tale, but somehow even grimmer by the end. The last line is a true gutpunch.
