The First Contest: Horror Manga

Here’s your first of three – yes that’s right, three ? chances to win something from DBS during this All Hallow’s Month.

The prize for winning this contest is a starter pack of some of the best horror comics out there ? modern horror manga (manga, for those who don’t know, being Japanese comics). The winner of this contest will receive:

• Uzumaki, Vol. 1, Junji Ito ? The first volume of what I, and many others, consider to be the best horror comics of all time
• The Red Snake, Hideshi Hino ? The first in the 16-volume Hino Horror series that introduces Hino’s odd combination of cutely grotesque art and horror-as-autobiography

And the winner’s choice of

• Priest Vol. 1, Min-Woo Hyun ? zombie killin’, demon fightin’, love losin’ action in the old West from Korea

Or

• Ultra-Gash Inferno, Suehiro Maruo ? Hardly any words to describe it except to say that you’re gonna have to be over 21 to win it.

Now, you’re probably asking, how do I win this cornucopia of comics? It’s easy! What we’ll need to see from you is a visual representation of our title ? Dark, But Shining. I’m not going to say more than that; I prefer to leave it to your imagination to determine what that means and how to execute it.

What we’ll need to see is your entries emailed to me or a link posted in the comments on this thread if you post something at your website. The winner will be announced on Oct. 10.

In the next week, we’ll be running some reviews I wrote for my old site about some of the prize books to whet you appetite.

These are some of the best horror comics out there and if you haven’t read them, you should enter to get a shot at starting off with them for free.
